250+ builds since 2019 WordPress & Shopify Core Web Vitals passing Lightweight by design Serving Larimer County

The Designers Directory is a web design and development company serving Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Timnath, Wellington, Berthoud and Greeley. We build custom WordPress and Shopify websites, handle replatforms and migrations, and deliver brand identity and packaging design alongside them. Founded in 2019, the team has completed more than 250 websites and brand projects.

Every build ships to the same standard regardless of budget: Core Web Vitals passing on mobile before launch, WCAG AA accessibility, LocalBusiness schema and local search architecture, verified conversion tracking, and documented handover. You own the domain, the hosting, the source files and every account we touch. Scope and fee are fixed before anything is signed.

We also run the Meta and Google campaigns for a lot of our clients, which is where the conversion decisions on these builds come from. That side is covered on the Fort Collins marketing page.

Why web design in Fort Collins is a different problem

Fort Collins buyers are unusually willing to do homework before they spend. They read past the homepage, check whether you are actually local, look for who runs the business, and quietly discount anything that feels like it came from a template. That is not a stereotype about a college town. It is a market where independent businesses have been rewarded for decades and where people have got good at telling the difference.

Which makes web design here a different problem from web design in a market where nobody scrolls. The site has to survive scrutiny, not just survive a glance.

What this market checks

  • Whether you are really from here. A real address, real photography, named people, specifics about the area. Generic stock imagery of a handshake reads as a national franchise trying to look local, and this city notices.
  • Whether the claims hold up. Sustainability, local sourcing, family ownership, B Corp status. Say any of it and somebody will verify it. Stated and substantiated beats stated alone by a wide margin here.
  • Who is behind the business. The About page gets read in Fort Collins far more than it does elsewhere. A site with no visible humans on it loses something real.
  • Whether it works on a phone in a parking lot. Northern Colorado sprawls, coverage varies, and a heavy site does not get read at all. Speed is not an abstraction here.

Our full technical approach is documented on the Denver web design page and does not change here. What changes is which parts of the site carry the weight.

Scope

What ships with every build

01

Custom Design

Built around your business rather than a purchased theme. In a market this attentive, a recognisable template is a liability rather than a saving.

02

A Real About Page

Structured to be read rather than skipped. Founders, team, origin, and the specifics that prove you are who you say you are.

03

Speed as a Launch Gate

Core Web Vitals passing on throttled mobile before launch. Not a phase two ticket that never gets opened.

04

Local SEO Foundation

LocalBusiness schema, geo signals, service and area pages, and alignment with your Google Business Profile from day one.

05

Accessible to WCAG AA

Semantic structure, keyboard operability, contrast and labelled forms, following the W3C guidelines.

06

Tracking & Handover

Analytics and conversion tracking proven to be firing before launch, not after. Then documentation, a walkthrough, and the keys to everything.

Lightweight Builds

A leaner website is a faster one, and a cleaner one

If your brand makes environmental claims, the website is part of the claim.

01 Weight is the problem

Most slow sites are simply too heavy: uncompressed images, a dozen plugins, fonts nobody uses, scripts loading site-wide for one page. Every kilobyte gets transferred, processed and powered.

02 What we cut

Modern image formats at rendered size, deferred non-critical JavaScript, self-hosted subset fonts, and a plugin count kept deliberately low. Lighter pages load faster and cost less to serve.

03 Measurable, not vague

Page weight and transfer size are numbers we report at handover. You can check any site yourself with Website Carbon or against the Sustainable Web Design guidelines.

04 Hosting counts too

Where it suits the project we recommend providers running on renewable energy, verifiable through the Green Web Foundation directory. A claim you can point at beats one you cannot.

To be clear about the scale of this: a website is a small part of any business's footprint and we are not going to pretend otherwise to sell a build. The honest version is that the techniques which make a site lighter are the same ones that make it fast, and fast is what converts. The efficiency is a real consequence rather than the sales pitch. If your brand already makes environmental claims, it is simply worth not having a bloated website quietly undercutting them.

Site Types

What Northern Colorado businesses actually need built

BusinessSite typeWhat decides it
Breweries & taproomsLight site plus events and DTCA tap list that is never stale, events, and a shop if you ship. Heavy photography is the usual reason these sites crawl.
CPG & food brandsShopify with a stockist layerProduct architecture, subscriptions and a store locator. Retail and direct sales pulling in opposite directions is the real design problem.
Restaurants & Old Town retailFast mobile siteMenu that loads instantly, hours that are always right, and photography that is genuinely yours.
Manufacturing & B2BCapability site on WordPressTechnical specification, certifications, past work and a serious tone. Few buyers, long cycles, high contract values.
Home services & tradesLead-generation siteTap-to-call, service and area pages, visible licensing. August rental turnover produces a reliable annual spike.
Healthcare & wellnessTrust-led site with bookingPractitioner bios, credentials and intake clarity. Reputation travels fast here, so reviews belong on the page.
Student-facing servicesMobile-first and conversion-focusedDecided in seconds on a phone. Pricing has to be visible and the signup path has to be short.

If the brand itself needs work before the site does, packaging, naming or identity, that sits on the branding and logo design page. If the project is engineering-led, a replatform or a system integration, see website development.

Before We Quote

What the free audit actually looks at

Mobile performance on a throttled connection

Tested the way your customers experience it rather than on office wifi. We are looking for Largest Contentful Paint inside 2.5 seconds, layout shift below 0.1, and interaction response under 200 milliseconds, measured on a mid-range phone rather than a laptop. Thresholds are published on web.dev and you can run the test yourself at PageSpeed Insights.

Page weight and what is causing it

Total transfer size, largest assets, plugin overhead and render-blocking resources. On most Fort Collins sites we audit, three or four images account for the majority of the weight and can be fixed in an afternoon without touching the design at all.

Whether search engines understand your business

Missing or malformed LocalBusiness markup, address data disagreeing between the site and your profile, and pages that were never indexed. Coverage gets checked in Search Console rather than assumed.

Whether you need a rebuild at all

Often not. If the structure is sound and the problem is visibility, the fix is local search or campaigns, and we will say so even though it is the smaller invoice. Selling somebody a website that does not solve their problem is a short-term win and a long-term reputation cost, particularly in a city this size.

Process

Four to eight weeks, fixed scope

01

Audit & Strategy

Week 1. Current performance, your Larimer County competitor set, and keyword architecture mapped to a sitemap before design begins.

02

Design

Weeks 2 to 3. Homepage first and approved before anything else is built out. Two rounds of revisions included at this stage.

03

Build

Weeks 3 to 6. Development, content, schema, asset optimisation and accessibility, tested on real devices rather than emulators.

04

QA

Week 7. Forms tested end to end, redirects mapped, tracking confirmed firing, Vitals and page weight verified against the agreed budget.

05

Launch

Low-traffic deployment with a rollback ready, Search Console submitted, and crawl coverage monitored afterwards rather than assumed.

06

Handover

Training, documentation and 30 days of support. Domain, hosting and every account in your name from the start.

FAQs

Web design in Fort Collins, answered straight

What does a website cost in Fort Collins?
The number moves with page count, whether copy and photography are included, custom functionality, commerce complexity, and whether SEO and tracking are built in from the start rather than added later. We scope after the free audit and hand you one fixed figure before anything is signed. No hourly meter, no change order appearing in week six.
Do you need to be in Fort Collins to build my site?
No, and we are not. We work out of the Denver metro. What matters is understanding that this market reads past the homepage, checks whether claims are real, and treats stock photography as a signal. That understanding changes the build. An Old Town office does not. If you would rather hire someone local, that is reasonable and we will not spend the call arguing you out of it.
How long does a build take?
Plan on four to eight weeks for a standard build, longer for commerce with real functionality behind it. Identity work stretches it by a couple of weeks. In practice the date moves because of content, not code: projects where copy and photography land on schedule finish early, and the ones waiting on a photographer do not.
Can you make our site faster without rebuilding it?
Frequently, yes. Most of the weight on sites we audit sits in a handful of uncompressed images, unused plugins, and fonts loading site-wide for one heading. A remediation pass usually takes one to two weeks and costs a fraction of a rebuild. We recommend that route when it is the right answer rather than defaulting to a new build.
What do you mean by a lightweight website?
One that transfers less data to do the same job: modern image formats served at the size they actually render, deferred non-critical scripts, self-hosted subset fonts, and a deliberately low plugin count. It loads faster on the mobile connections most of your customers are using and costs less to serve. We report page weight at handover so it is a number rather than a claim.
Do you work with breweries and CPG brands?
Regularly. The structural puzzle with these brands is that the taproom, the wholesale accounts and the online shop all want the site to be about them. Decide that hierarchy before design starts and everything downstream is straightforward. Decide it afterwards and you are paying to bolt a stockist map or a subscription flow onto a structure that was never shaped for it.
Will the site rank locally?
It ships with the foundation that makes ranking possible: crawlable structure, LocalBusiness schema, clean metadata, internal linking, compressed assets and Vitals passing on mobile. Rankings then come from content, Google Business Profile activity, citations and reviews over the following months. In a market this size that tends to move faster than it does in Denver, because there is less competition to outrank.
Can you rebuild without losing our rankings?
Yes. Every indexed URL is crawled and exported before migration, then mapped to a destination. Redirects go in at server or CDN level, metadata and canonicals are preserved, and coverage is watched in Search Console for weeks afterwards. Some movement while Google recrawls is normal. Sustained loss means something was missed, and it is preventable.
Do you also run advertising?
Yes, over $10 million of it since 2019, which is where the conversion decisions on these builds come from. If you want the campaign side, the Fort Collins marketing page covers how it runs and why student and resident audiences need separating.
Is there a web design company in Fort Collins that also handles marketing?
That combination is rarer than it should be. Most Fort Collins web design companies build the site and hand it off, and most marketing agencies run campaigns without touching the page they land on. We do both, which means the site gets designed by the people buying the traffic to it and there is no second vendor to blame when the numbers drop. The campaign side is covered on the Fort Collins marketing page, including search engine marketing and local SEO.
Do you build outside Fort Collins?
Yes. Loveland, Windsor, Timnath, Wellington, Berthoud, Greeley and Estes Park, plus the wider Front Range and clients across the United States since 2019. More on how we work is on the about page.
